BYU’s Defense Needs to Get Their Swagger Back Against Utah State

BYU's defense has a chance to make a statement against a good Utah State offense.

A team needs to have a level of confidence in their play in order to succeed. This doesn’t mean the team is cocky, but they do need to have a certain swagger. The confidence of BYU’s defense has been wavering since their loss to Florida State.

BYU has traditionally had trouble containing mobile quarterbacks. Anyone who watched the Florida State game knows the play making ability of Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder really hurt the Cougars defense throughout the game.

Florida State was able to control the ball on the ground. Florida State used Ponder’s mobility to convert key third downs early in the game, and that kept Max Hall and BYU’s offense off the field. Utah State will try to follow this blueprint against BYU this Friday.

Utah State is much improved from last season. The Aggies have a strong offense this season led by quarterback Diondre Borel, and star running back Robert Turbin. Utah State’s offense is currently ranked ninth in the nation in total offense.

Yes, ninth!

The Aggies are currently ranked ahead of the touted BYU offense. Plus, the Aggies’ offensive numbers aren’t inflated from playing multiple low level opponents. Utah State played a good Texas A&M team, a Utah team with an extremely good defense, and their single gimmie game of the season so far was against a scrappy Southern Utah squad. The Aggies’ offense is legit, and it is lead by Borel and Turbin.

Diondre Borel is mobile playmaker, who knows how to control the football. Borel only has a single interception this season. He is not an accurate passer only completing 52% of his passes, but he is an excellent game manger. On third down Borel is good at using his athletic ability to convert third downs on the ground.

Robert Turbin has breakaway speed. Every time Turbin touches the ball he has the potential to turn the play into a touchdown. Turbin is also able to run with power. He is strong enough to run over defenders, and pickup additional yards after contact. It will take solid tackling to bring him down.

The Utah State game will be an interesting opportunity for BYU’s defense to really demonstrate just what they are made of this season.

What is the goal for BYU’s defense against Utah State? Regain their swagger.

BYU’s defense was great in the first two games against the run. The defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers were flying all over the field. The last two games the defense has looked sluggish, and the defensive line has been manhandled.

The keys for BYU to stop Utah State’s offense will start with the defensive line. Jan Jorgenson and Brett Denny need to get constant pressure on Borel; however, they need to play assignment sound football. They need to know where they are on the field during their pass rush. They cannot overrun the pocket, and allow Borel to step up and evade the initial pass rush.

The linebackers will have to be playing to stop the run. The linebackers will need to fill the gaps with solid run blitzes to contain Turbin. The linebacker will also be the second line of defense against the mobility of Borel. This means that either Coleby Clawson or Terrance Hooks needs to be spying on Borel. Whoever is spying on Borel will need to make sure to punish Borel, if he chooses to leave the pocket.

With BYU focusing on the run the secondary will need to stay home and protect against the play-action pass. The four members of the secondary are averaging the most tackles per game on the Cougar defense. This aggression by the defensive secondary, to cheat down on the run, has burned BYU in the last two games when teams use play-action passing.

Florida State and Colorado State both took advantage of the play-action pass to pick apart BYU’s defense. Utah State with such a powerful running game will be looking to hit a few home run balls against the Cougars Friday night.

BYU’s secondary will have to rely on the front seven to control the line of scrimmage, which will allow the secondary to stay home and defend against the pass.

BYU’s defense is built on being assignment sound. BYU believes their defense will out execute the opposing team’s offense. Against Oklahoma to start the season each unit of the defense was nearly perfect in their assignments, and the defense looked to be a formidable juggernaut in the Mountain West Conference.

BYU’s defense really has a chance to reestablish itself as the strength of the 2009 Cougar football team with a solid effort. While national media and most average fans will not think much of stopping Utah State’s offense; if BYU were to hold Utah State under ten points it would be a real moral victory. A moral victory and confidence boaster BYU could continue to build on during conference play.

One of the biggest supports BYU’s defense can receive is solid play from BYU’s offense. BYU needs to keep their defense off the field. This means limiting the number of times they allow their opponents to start with a short field by turning over the ball.

It also means the offense needs to rely more on the running game to overpower the smaller Aggie defense. While the Aggies are ranked number nine in total offense, they are ranked 117th in total defense.

BYU could get into a shootout with Utah State and win. They have more fire power on the offensive side of the ball to simply out score the Aggies. Yet, BYU would benefit more over the course of the season by constructing long sustained drives.

Controlling the football against a weaker Utah State team would allow BYU’s defense to rest, and be more dominate on the field. This would allow BYU defenders to have a solid performance against an offense ranked in the top 10. BYU’s defense would regain their swagger which they had in the first two games of the season.

It is going to take a complete offense and defense for BYU to win the conference this season. If the BYU’s offense will lend a hand this Friday, then BYU’s defense could have a statement level performance.

Quick Observations From the Utah vs Utah State Game

Observations about the Utah vs Utah State game...

The Utah vs Utah State game was very interesting last night. While the game was in hand for most of the fourth quarter, and it was very clear that there was a difference between where the Aggies are in respect to the Utes, the game was closer than people thought.

Utah defense did just enough to win. The Utah defense that has been touted to be the driving force this season for the Utes, did not perform to the level of expectations. Utah defenders will bring up the point that the Aggies didn't convert a third down the entire game. Yet, the Aggies were still able to move the ball against the Utes. It was poor play calling that cost the Aggies on third and fourth down, which was one of the many signs during the game that Utah State had a rookie head coach. If Utah wants to maintain their spot at the top of the conference this season, then their defense will need to improve.

Utah's offense didn't manage the game. The thought before the season was that Utah's offense would manage the game, limiting their turnovers, and then allow their defense to control the field position. In the second half the Utes figured out that they could pound the ball on the ground through the weak Utah State defensive line. While the statistics look good on paper, the execution on the field was generally poor. The Utes have one more game to get their offense in order before they start face better defensive units.

Utah State blew opportunities. The Aggies marched down the field on the first drive of the game. Just that single drive proved that Utah State will be able to move the ball this season. Turbin also proved that he will be an elite running back in the Western Athletic Conference. The hit of the night occurred when Turbin knocked a Ute defender on his back and then sprinted for another five yards. Turbin is a physical runner that also has explosive speed. The real problem with the Utah State offense was the play calling. Too often they would go away from the spread offense that was successful for most of the game, especially on key third and fourth down plays. The Aggies never took advantage of any of the turnovers in the game, and also failed to give Borel time in the pocket. The good news is the adjustments that Utah State needs to make are tweaks and not major overhauls.

How about the new uniforms for the Aggies. The Mtn. was broadcasting the previous two Utah vs. Utah State games leading up to the game last night. One thing that was obvious is that Utah State now has a little more money in the football program. The uniforms the previous two seasons looked as if they were something a JV junior high team would wear. The color was bad, their was a lack of names on the back of the jersey, and everything about them scream second rate. A coach I had growing up taught me an important lesson, "Teams will play like they look." It might be subconscious, but teams will play better if they have nicer equipment. The Aggies looked like an actual college football team last night, and they played like an actual team too. Expect success from the new look Aggies.

What Will it Take for BYU and Utah State to Win this Weekend?

Both BYU and Utah State are trying to prove everyone wrong this week...

21

The number 21 is the connection that both the BYU vs Oklahoma and the Utah State vs Utah games share. 21 is the betting line for both games, with Utah State and BYU being the underdogs in each. Yet, it is hard to think that BYU is as far away from Oklahoma as Utah State is from Utah.

Utah State probably has a much better chance of beating Utah than BYU has beating Oklahoma. Look back at the Aggies season a year ago, and you will notice that they weren't that far away from a 5-7 season. While you might be saying, "What is the big deal? 3-9 or 5-7, both are pretty bad." Yes, both are poor records to have as a team, but there is a big difference between barely 3-9 and a disappointing 3-9. The Aggies had the talent last season to be a 5-7 team, and try to push to find a way to get a sixth all important win.

The majority of the contributing players that the Aggies had last season are back this season. They have a solid running back in Robert Turbin, and a proven play maker in Diondre Borel. The defense should be better, although the defensive line could still use some serious work. The other difference that the Aggies have, which will make a difference, is a change in attitude. It is clear to anyone watching the Aggies practice that there is a different mentality among the team. Gary Anderson has brought in a culture of accountability, discipline, and hope.

In regards to the Utah game, Utah State has the competitive advantage in that Utah has no idea what to expect from the Aggies. While at the same time Gary Anderson knows Utah's defense inside and out. Anderson has done everything that he can to keep a tight lid on the changes he is implementing in Logan. He is restricting the media's access to his players, practices, and even limiting what he showed to fans at the final fall scrimmage. Gary Anderson could have some surprises in store for his old team, when he makes his return to Rice-Eccles stadium.

Utah State is improved this season, but Utah might be a little overrated from last season. Utah is still a very good football team; however, they have lost some key skill players. Brian Johnson really made the offense work last season, and his loss along with Darrell Mack will hurt the productivity of the offense. Yet, the biggest loss for Utah is Paul Kruger. The most influential position on defense in college football is defensive end. A good defensive end will change a college football game. If you think otherwise, just look back at last year's BYU vs Utah game. Kruger almost single handily shut down Max Hall in that game. Kruger was a player that other teams had to game plan for, and always know where he was on the field. Utah has some good talent on defense, but they don't have another Paul Kruger.

Utah is trying to retool their offense on the run, and rely on their defense to carry them in their first few games. This is the biggest advantage, and chance that Utah State has in their opening game. If Gary Anderson's knowledge of Utah's defense can establish a weakness that the Aggies could exploit, then Utah State could get into a higher scoring game which would give them a chance to outscore a newly tooled Utah offense.

While Utah is good, but rebuilding; Oklahoma is great, they are coming back from a National Title Game loss, and the majority of their skill players are coming back. They have a Heisman Trophy winner, arguably the best front seven on defense ever in college football, and a stable full of tall athletic wide receivers. Oklahoma has little to no question marks going into the season, they are only worried about a possible injury derailing their chances of beating Texas and returning to the National Championship game.

BYU on the other hand ended last season on a huge low note. Max Hall turned into an interception/fumbling machine. Unga disappeared from the offense. The secondary was a complete joke. Plus, the four out of five offensive linemen graduated from school. The offensive line and secondary were the major concerns coming into the new season for BYU, and surprisingly enough there are more questions and concerns about the offensive line and secondary today than at the beginning of camp.

Three offensive linemen who were thought to contribute this season are injured: Matt Reynolds, Houston Reynolds, and Jason Speredon, although Matt Reynolds may return for the Oklahoma game.

The secondary is a pure mystery. The athletes in the secondary are better this season, than last year's secondary. Yet, the top four secondary guys are all fighting injuries, and another member of the secondary, Garett Nicholson, didn't qualify for school.

BYU has their work cut out for them against the Sooners. The only real chance that BYU has in their opening game is to control the clock. BYU would have to turn to their ground attack to keep the ball out of Sam Bradford's hands. Even if BYU were to make the game low scoring, and control the time of possession, it is very unlikely that they will win.

BYU needs to hope that they will at least be in striking distance at the end of the game, and hope that one of the new players can step up and have a breakout game. The one weakness that the Sooners do have, is they are trying to replace members of their secondary. If BYU can stay close, they could take advantage of the Sooners' secondary in the end.

Is it a long shot for both BYU and Utah State? Yes. Can both teams still have successful seasons even if they lose their opening game? Yes. Could both teams win their openers? It would shock some people, but it isn't impossible. There is a reason that teams actually play the game on the field and not on paper.

NCAA Tournament Seeding for Utah Teams

A look at Utah teams and their tournament hopes...

Utah State - If you are a fan of the Aggies it was a shot to the gut to see USU get an 11 seed. Yet, another example of how few teams outside of the "Major Conferences" got any respect. It also meant that if the Aggies didn't win their conference tournament they would have been on the outside looking into the tournament. With that in mind, the Aggies need to be smiling when they view where and who they are playing. The Aggies drew an injured Marquette team that didn't finish the season well, and they are playing at Boise. The closest that the Aggies could get to playing a home game. Then to look out a little further on the bracket, the Aggies potential second round opponent would be Missouri. The weakest of all the three seeds in the tournament. The Aggies might have drawn a low seed, but the table is set for them to march into the sweet sixteen and prove that they were underrated.

Utah - A five seed! I still can't get over the surprise of when I heard that the Utes gained a five seed in the tournament. Utah didn't finish the season well. They were in the driver seat for the conference and ended up with a three way tie for the regular season title. The Utes then barely got by TCU, and played San Diego State to the buzzer to win the conference tournament (Which also makes San Diego State's omission from the field that much more insulting to the "Mid-Major" Conferences). Yet, the committee thought that the play of the Utes earned them merit, and they ended up with a five seed. Or in other words the committee believes that Utah is one of the twenty best teams in all of college basketball...huh? The Utes did have a high RPI, but I think what helped them most was having their AD on the selection committee. It helps to have friends in high places. The location of the play for Utah is not good. The Utes must travel to Miami to play their games. An insult to any five seed that they must travel across the country. Especially when a higher seed normally means that they get a location closer to their university to play. Utah is a two point underdog to Arizona, another slap in the face of a five seed. The Utes should beat 'Zons, but face a stiff second round challenge playing Wake Forest back east in the second round.

BYU - Another year, another terrible draw for BYU. Once again BYU is playing on the East Coast. They are playing in the early contests, meaning that BYU will be playing at 10:30am local time. BYU is also in a rematch with last year's opponent Texas A&M. A&M's seeding is interesting, and would be hard to explain (as many of the selection committee's decisions are equally perplexing). The Aggies were the fourth best team in the Big 12, but they are seed lower than both Texas and Oklahoma State, both teams that finished below them in the regular season. The Aggies have quick guards that give have given BYU trouble guarding in the past. Also even if the Cougars were to win their first tournament game of the new millennium, BYU would have to face UConn in UConn's backyard. If BYU's shots are falling they can beat anyone, and they will need those shots to fall if they want to win any tournament games this season.

Week 12 Mountain West Football Predictions

This week will be big for the middle of the Mountain West Conference...

Scott turns in the first sub-.500 week of predictions. This allowed me to pull even in the Head-to-Head standings, and pull ahead in the overall standings. Here are the results/standings:

Mark[Last Week 6-3(.667) 67-34(.663) Head-To-Head 4-4-2]
Scott[Last Week 4-5(.444) 66-35(.653) Head-To-Head 4-4-2]

Not many good match-ups this week. BYU and Utah try not to look ahead to the Holy War next week. Here are the prediction:

Wyoming @ UNLV 7PM MT CBSC

Wyoming beat Tennessee, but they weren't dominate. UNLV is better than their record. The Rebels will take care of the Cowboys this week.

UNLV 24 Wyoming 13

Wyoming shocked the world last week going into Knoxville and pulling the upset against Tennessee. Unfortunately they are going to get lost in the lights in Las Vegas and lose this game. It hard to believe that Wyoming still has a chance to become bowl eligible…AMAZING! The same goes for UNLV…

UNLV 28 Wyoming 13

New Mexico @ Colorado State 12PM MT The Mtn

Colorado State has far more to play for in this game. New Mexico is the last real challenge that the Rams have between them and becoming bowl eligible. New Mexico continues to dominate the games on the ground, and use the defense to control the game clock. Teams that try to use the clock to win games have trouble on the road.

Colorado State 31 New Mexico 17

CSU got handled last week by Air Force and it will be interesting to see what the Rams’ offense can do against New Mexico. One thing going for Colorado State is that New Mexico struggles putting up points. Rodney Ferguson does just enough to get the Lobos the W.

New Mexico 17 Colorado State 14

The Big Podcast GAME OF THE WEEK
#17 BYU @ AFA 1:30PM MT CBSC

This game is going to surprise a lot of people, because BYU is going to win and win big. Why? Air Force doesn't have the time to game plan to exploit holes in their opponents defense. The Cadets have too much training at this time of year, and they will just stick with the triple option. The triple option plays into the strength of the BYU defense, and Air Force's defense will have a hard time stopping the BYU offensive attack.

BYU 42 Air Force 13

If there is one team that BYU always seems to handle it is Air Force. For whatever reason, BYU knows how to stop the Falcons’ option attack. BYU still have something to play for and something to prove. While AFA doesn’t though much, expect them to take multiple shots deep against a pretty bad secondary.

BYU 31 Air Force 21

#7 Utah @ San Diego State 6PM MT The Mtn

Get ready for the Holy War, because this should just be a scrimmage for the Utes.

Utah 49 San Diego State 10

Utah has the luxury of a cupcake game before their showdown with the BYU on Nov. 22. The only problem Utah will face is what this game will do to their BCS standing.

Utah 35 San Diego State 10

Utah State @ Louisiana Tech 12:30PM MT

Louisiana Tech isn't the push over that they have been over the past few years. They are 5-4 and third in the WAC. The Bulldogs went to San Jose State and shut them out, a very impressive accomplishment! The Aggies got beat up at Boise State, and have to travel again to Louisiana. This would be a big win for the Aggies; however, it is just too much travel and competition for Utah State to handle. Bulldogs win Cajun style!

Louisiana Tech 24 Utah State 16

This is a very winnable game for the Aggies, unfortunately this is a game they have lost in the past. Despite their record, USU appears to have improved as the season has progressed. Believe it or not, but USU could finish the season right in the middle of the WAC standings.

Utah State 27 Louisiana Tech 24

#16 North Carolina @ Maryland 1:30PM MT ABC

OVERRATED!!! Both teams are overrated in this game. The ACC is just bad, and the national media continues to try and sell the tough games the North Carolina has played. If BYU, Utah, or TCU were in the ACC all of them would be undefeated this year. Maryland will beat the Tar Heels and show the mediocrity of the conference.

Maryland 28 North Carolina 17

Butch Davis has got the Tar Heels believing that they can win the ACC. Six points is the difference between 7-2 and 9-0. Of Maryland’s three losses, one was against Middle Tennessee State (!!!!) and the other came against Virginia. What Maryland team is going to show up? The one that lost by 10 to Middle Tenn. State, or the one that shutout Wake Forest? Either way, UNC wins this game.

North Carolina 21 Maryland 7

California @ Oregon State 1:30PM MT ABC

California has struggled all season to score points. Oregon State has looked good at home, and will win the game.

Oregon State 28 Cal 14

Who would have ever thought that Oregon State would control their own destiny in the Pac 10? As much talk as there is about USC playing for the national championship, there is no way the BCS would let them into that game if Oregon State wins the Pac 10. That is still a ways away for OSU. Cal is a tough football team and could potentially give OSU a lot of problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if Utah fans are more interested in this game instead of the SDSU game this weekend.

Cal 24 Oregon State 17

Boston College @ #19 Florida State 6PM MT ABCHD

Terrible conference, and terrible game. Not only is the ACC bad, but their games are BORING to watch! Florida State wins a snore fest! (Although, a brawl cause Bobby B to suspend his receiving core! Off the field issue at Florida State...yet another shocker!)

Florida State 24 Boston College 10

Florida State is a long way from becoming the Florida State team that dominated the 1990s, but they are getting back on track. They have a very competitive team, and as mediocre the ACC has been this year, it is enough to play for the conference championship. A total of 8 teams are still in contention to win the ACC. Florida State’s offense will be going up against a very good Boston College defense. BC’s offense didn’t look all that impressive against Notre Dame, which could be disastrous against a fast, hard nosed defense like the Seminoles.

Florida State 21 Boston College 14

Week 11 Mountain West Conference Football Predictions

Another week of selecting every Mountain West Conference Football game...

Week 10 brought many exciting football games, but it also brought a tie-breaking win for Scott in the Head-To-Head predictions. Here are the results/overall standings:

Mark[Last Week 5-4(.555) 61-31(.663) Head-To-Head 3-4-2]
Scott[Last Week 5-4(.555) 62-30(.673) Head-To-Head 4-3-2]

This week brings the biggest game in Mountain West Conference history. It is also another quality week of football in the Big 12. Here are the predictions for week 11:

#12 TCU @ #8 Utah 6PM MT CBSC

This will be the biggest game in conference history and on paper it looks to be very good. TCU has been on a tear since embarrassing BYU at home. The Horned Frogs aren't going to be at home this Thursday and that is going to make a huge difference in the game. Utah has played lights out at home this season, and that will really help Brian Johnson to have a good game which is essential to Utah winning the game. The game will be close, but Utah will beat TCU using a late field goal.

Utah 24 TCU 21

Utah has a very good defense, while their offense is still looking for consistency. If they play like they did last week against New Mexico this could get out of hand. But Utah seems to play their best in the big games and I imagine that this one will go down to the wire. Everyone knows about TCU’s top ranked defense, but everyone seems to forget about their offense. TCU is second in the conference in total offense and first in points scored. This should live up to all the hype.

TCU 24 Utah 21

Wyoming @ Tennessee 11AM MT ESPN360

Poor Joe Glenn. A week after getting a much needed conference win the Cowboys have to fly to Tennessee to get their butts kicked.

Tennessee 49 Wyoming 7

It may be unfortunate that this game wasn’t played earlier in the year for Tennessee. The Vols are not the power they once were and head coach Fulmer is headed out the door. I expect Tennessee to play hard and dominate this game. Wyoming is looking to build on their domination of SDSU, but lets be honest…this isn’t going to be pretty.

Tennessee 35 Wyoming 10

San Diego State @ #15 BYU 12PM MT The Mtn

New Mexico put 70 points up on the Aztec defense. BYU very well could put up 100 points. BYU's defense has not looked good since the TCU game, but the defense should be able to shut down a poor Aztec offense. If BYU doesn't win and win big it is time to hit the panic button if you are a BYU fan; however, I don't see BYU having any trouble this weekend.

BYU 63 San Diego State 10

This game couldn’t come at a better time for BYU. They need to get healthy on the defensive side of the ball before they end the season on the road against Air Force and Utah. SDSU is not good at all. The only bright spot for the Aztecs is that BYU’s 4th string cornerback (Steven Thomas) is getting quite a bit of playing time. BYU’s pass defense is just plain awful. The difference between BYU’s defense at the beginning of the year and now is turnovers. If SDSU can hold on to the ball they should be able to score a few points. The problem for SDSU is that BYU’s offense will be able to score at will against them.

BYU 49 San Diego State 28

Colorado State @ Air Force 4PM MT The Mtn

This is a big game for both schools in Colorado. The Falcons have only the single hard fought conference loss to Utah, and they have held off the fatigue that Air Force teams of the past have suffered as the college football team progresses. This should be a very close game, but Colorado State match-up well with Air Force.

Colorado State 31 Air Force 21

This game will determine how far CSU has come this year. CSU still has a lot to play for this year. They need 2 more wins to become bowl eligible. If Air Force looks past the Rams at their last two games against BYU and TCU then CSU could steal on against the Falcons. CSU has had trouble stopping the run and everyone knows that Air Force is going to run over 80% of the time on offense.

Air Force 27 Colorado State 17

New Mexico @ UNLV 8PM MT The Mtn

UNLV's loss to TCU was the first game that the Rebels just didn't compete in all season. The Rebels have played well all season, but haven't found a way to win games. New Mexico has a tough defense that controlled Utah at home, but New Mexico won't have the offensive weapons to take advantages of the holes in the UNLV defense.

UNLV 28 New Mexico 13

UNLV continues to confuse most football fans. At times they look like they have finally put things together, and then at times they look like the UNLV of the past. Both UNLV and New Mexico need to win out in order to become bowl eligible, so they definitely have a lot to play for. If New Mexico’s defense plays like they did last week against Utah then they have a very good chance at winning this game. Both teams love their big running backs and the power running game. How healthy is Omar Clayton? Is this the game that UNLV finally pulls out in the 4th quarter? The winner keeps those bowl hopes alive…it should come down to the wire.

New Mexico 21 UNLV 17

Utah State @ #10 Boise State 12 PM MT ESPN360

This is the best time for the Aggies to go to Boise and hope to compete against the Broncos. Utah State had a great home stand facing Fresno State and Hawaii at home. A 58 yard field goal kept Utah State from going 2-0. Boise State hasn't lost a conference game at home since joining the conference. The Broncos will win this game, but Utah State will keep it close.

Boise State 24 Utah State 16

USU has not been able to get any momentum going through out the season. Coming off their first win of the year the Aggies went up against #8 (at the time) BYU. What is USU’s reward for beating Hawaii last week…only the #10 Boise State Broncos. I’m not sure how good this Boise State team is…and I’m not convinced that they are BCS worthy (not sure if any of the non BCS teams are). Utah State could solve this problem if they somehow beat BSU. They need to force some turnovers and have a huge day from Borel. The Aggies are playing their best football of the season and should be playing with some confidence. I just don’t think that USU has enough fire power to beat BSU.

Boise State 34 Utah State 17

#1 Alabama @ #16 LSU 1:30PM MT CBS

Nick Saban returns to LSU to take on his old team. Alabama has looked dominate this season, and Alabama is the last remaining unbeaten team in the conference. This game against LSU appears to be the last hurdle for them to cleat to get to the national championship game before the SEC title game(I say "appears" but really every game in the SEC is a tough game). Alabama has proven that they can win on the road, and LSU has looked far from dominating at home. Alabama will take care of business again this weekend.

Alabama 35 LSU 17

Which LSU team is going to show up this week? LSU is supposed to be anchored by their defense, but the last two games they played against ranked opponents they are allowing 51 points/game. They have to find a way to contain Alabama’s rushing attack on defense and somehow find a way to score on offense. Alabama’s defense is not going to give up a lot of yards. LSU needs to create turnovers and create favorable field position with their special teams. Alabama is more opportunistic than “high powered”. They force you to make mistakes and then convert those mistakes into points. I’m not sold on Bama as the #1 team in the country. The SEC is not as good as everyone thinks it is. If LSU were to lose this game, it is possible that only 3 SEC teams would be ranked.

LSU 24 Alabama 21

#9 Oklahoma State @ #2 Texas Tech 6PM MT ABCHD

Texas Tech gets a break by having this game at home. It will be hard for the Red Raiders to get up for two big games in a row, and Oklahoma State has just the singular loss to Texas. This game is going to be a shootout and it will come down to who has the football last at the end of the game.

Oklahoma State 49 Texas Tech 42

If anyone missed last week’s classic between Texas and Texas Tech, this week’s match up between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech should offer similar results. Right now, the difference between these two teams is that Tech completed their last second pass to score a touchdown to beat Texas, and OSU did not. Both teams have game breaking WRs and exceptional QBs. This should be very exciting…I expect that whoever has the ball last is going to win.

Oklahoma State 31 Texas Tech 28

#11 Ohio State @ #24 Northwestern 10AM MT ESPN2HD

How do Big Ten teams continue to crack into the top 25? Northwestern isn't going to hang around very long in this football game.

Ohio State 31 Northwestern 10

Last week Northwestern beat Minnesota without their starting QB and RB. Both are going to need to play if they want to have a shot against the Buckeyes. Despite their two losses, OSU remains the most talented team in the Big 10 and they out man Northwestern at every position. Playing on the road in Evanston shouldn’t be a problem for OSU because Northwestern only manages to get ~30k fans for each home game (half of which are the other team’s fans). NW may put up a fight early, but it won’t take long for OSU to take control of this game.

Week 10 Mountain West Conference Football Predictions

A sleep deprived edition of picks of every Mountain West Football game...

Scott was perfect last week with his picks. Yet, just like Penn State, and Texas(the two games that put him over the top last week) it literally came down to two Hail-Marys at the end of the game. This week should be interesting as the top three teams in the conference will have tough opponents that traditionally play them well. Utah and TCU are trying to avoid any slip ups before their showdown next Thursday. Here are the results from last week:

Mark[Last Week 7-2(.778) Overall 56-27(.674) Head-To-Head 3-3-2]
Scott[Last Week 9-0(1.000) Overall 57-26(.686) Head-To-Head 3-3-2]

This week should be interesting I am making my picks on about two hours of sleep, thanks to trying to help Madsen win a trip to the Dominican Republic(more detail will come on the podcast). No excuses as I look to rebound like BYU this week and take back the lead from Scott. Here are the week 10 picks:

Air Force @ Army 10AM MT ESPNU

Army won't give Air Force problems.

Air Force 31 Army 17

Air Force is rolling right now. Army has put together a decent 4 game stretch against the likes of Tulane, Easter Michigan, Buffalo, and La Tech. Air Force just might be the toughest team on Army’s schedule. There have only been 85 pass attempts between the two starting QBs. Houston’s Case Keenum has attempted 374 passes alone. Run, run, run, run, and run. Air Force’s defense is much better than Army’s.

Air Force 27 Army 14

San Diego State @ Wyoming 12PM MT The Mtn.

WOW! Set your TIVO for this barn burner. This might be the worst match-up in all of college football this season. San Diego State seems to have shown more in the past weeks than the Wyoming. The better question than who is going to win this game, is when will the Pokes fire Joe Glenn?

San Diego State 28 Wyoming 14 (Glenn fired Nov 23rd)

Poor SDSU, poor Wyoming. Does anyone else get sick to their stomachs thinking about this game? Actually I think that SDSU is going to have a breakout game. Their offense seems to be playing at their highest level this season. Wyoming moved the ball pretty effectively in the first half against TCU last week. When looking at each team, SDSU seems to be improving, while Wyoming is…well…terrible is putting it lightly.

San Diego State 24 Wyoming 10

#20 BYU @ Colorado State 4PM MT The Mtn.

This looks to be a tough game for BYU on the road. BYU stepped up at home with their backs against the wall and got a big win. BYU is ready to explode on offense if Anae will call the right plays, and he should do it this week against Colorado State.

BYU 42 Colorado State 13

Everyone is expecting this game to be close. CSU always plays BYU tough in Fort Collins. We know BYU’s offense can score points, we also know that BYU’s defense can stop the local high school powder puff team. At the end of the day, I think BYU can outscore CSU. I am really impressed at how CSU is playing right now. They have a very good chance at becoming bowl eligible, which would be huge. It is tough winning games against better teams when your defense gives up 31 points a game. When it comes down to it, Colorado State’s defense won’t be able to stop BYU when they need to.

BYU 24 Colorado State 21

#10 Utah @ New Mexico 7:30PM MT The Mtn.

New Mexico could be trouble for Utah, if they had a passing game, but they don't. Utah will struggle to move the ball against the Lobos defense, but will have great field position and will wear down the Lobos as the game progresses.

Utah 38 New Mexico 7

If there is one team on Utah’s schedule that consistently gives Utah problems, it is New Mexico. Utah is 2-4 against the Lobos over the past 6 years. Rocky Long will have his team ready for the Utes and I am sure the Whittingham will have his team ready to play too. Utah has a knack of winning very close games. This game should go down to the wire.

Utah 31 New Mexico 27

#13 TCU @ UNLV 6PM MT Versus

UNLV has been in every conference game they played this season. This should be a good shot for the Rebels to pull of an upset as TCU will be looking ahead to Utah. The problem for UNLV is they are a poor man's Utah. They run basically the same scheme on offense, and TCU will be ready to defend it.

TCU 21 UNLV 13

I expect UNLV to have a huge letdown this week. It is no secret that teams get up to play against BYU. UNLV definitely has talent, but their defense has some major holes. And to say the TCU’s defense is better than BYU’s is a huge understatement. UNLV is going to struggle with the speed and athleticism of TCU. If this game is close, I would suspect that TCU is looking forward to their game against Utah next Thursday.

TCU 35 UNLV 13

Hawaii @ Utah State 1PM MT ESPN360

Aggies don't play well after close losses. Utah State has the talent to compete, but won't have the leadership to recover from a heart-breaking loss.

Hawaii 31 Utah State 16

How is Utah State going to respond to last week’s heart wrenching loss to Fresno State? After a loss like that, Brent Guy has to get his team to believe that they can win, which is going to be pretty tough. Everything seems to going against the Aggies. Unfortunately I think they lose another close game this weekend.

Hawaii 24 Utah State 21

#8 Florida @ #6 Georgia 1:30 PM MT CBS

Those Dawgs will run! Georgia has quietly played themselves back into the top team in the country, and will be ready for Florida. Don't expect Florida to surprise Georgia at home.

Georgia 31 Florida 24

Last year’s Florida vs. Georgia game was one of my favorites all year. Nothing like two teams that hate each other doing battle. This is one game that I don’t think Tim Tebow can carry the Gators. Although it is tough picking against a team that is scoring 50+ points/game and only allowing 11/game since losing to Mississippi. Both teams are solid, but I think Georgia will be able to establish a ground attack and control the clock, keeping Florida’s offense off the field.

Georgia 27 Florida 24

The Big Podcast: GAME OF THE WEEK
#1 Texas @ #7 Texas Tech 6PM MT ABCHD

Texas is ready for this game, and Texas Tech has holes in their team. Texas will win this game big.

Texas 42 Texas Tech 21

Will it ever stop for Texas? Four straight weeks playing a top ten team! Up until now the Longhorns have proven that they deserve the top spot in the polls. I think this is the week it catches up to them. As usual Texas Tech played a cupcake schedule (two teams from D-II) and they put up a ton of points against everyone they play. The Red Raiders always seem to be overrated and untested but you can throw all that out in a game like this (I don’t want to call it a rivalry game because Texas’ rivals are Oklahoma and A&M). I like this upset because it is very hard to beat very good teams week after week, and Texas is going to come up just a little short in this one.

Texas Tech 49 Texas 44

#18 Tulsa @ Arkansas 12PM MT ESPN360

Who has Tulsa played this season? NOBODY! This Tulsa team hasn't faced a top defense the entire season. Arkansas isn't very good, but they are good enough to expose Tulsa at home.

Arkansas 28 Tulsa 17

There are two teams that no one is talking about…Ball State and Tulsa, two teams that could potentially play in a BCS game (not going to happen). Tulsa boasts the top offense in the country. They score 55 and gain over 600 yards of offense each week (important to note that the best team they have faced so far has been New Mexico). Arkansas is rebuilding and is not a very good football team right now. The BCS is praying that Arkansas somehow pulls off the upset, but Tulsa’s offensive scheme will be too much for the Razorbacks. Arkansas won’t be able to score enough points to make this game interesting.

Tulsa 35 Arkansas 17

Quick Hits: Utah Jazz, BYU Football, Utah State Football, MLB Playoffs, and More...

A quick look at many sports stories...

Could Andrei Kirilenko work? - Maybe.  It will all depend on AK's attitude.  Something that is very hard to judge until you see how Andrei plays on the court.  If AK doesn't feel like he is being snub by the move to the bench, then you might be looking at the sixth man of the year award winner.  Sure it stings a little to have your highest paid players be coming off the bench, but look at Manu Ginobili to see what AK could become.  The Spurs, like the Jazz, run a set offense that is based around the pick and roll.  Tim Duncan needs to be feed the ball early to get his game going, just like Carlos Boozer on the Jazz.  The problem in the past with AK has come with getting him touches early in the game.  Bringing him off the bench would solve that problem.  When Manu enters the game for the Spurs the post has normally been established, and the Spurs are looking to expand their offense.  That would be the same principle applied to AK and the Jazz.  It would be easier to get AK involved later in the first quarter keeping him happy.  A happy AK, is a great AK.  The Jazz struggled last season when Deron left the floor.  AK would be a stabilizing influence on the court with the younger/newer back-up point guards the Jazz have.  AK also plays well with Millsap, with both of them being active play makers that create instant offensive opportunities.  AK would also be playing more with Korver than Brewer.  That would help open up the Jazz offense.  Last season teams would pack their defenses into the paint knowing that neither Brewer or AK would beat them from the outside.  Korver being on the court would make the other team more honest, and AK would make-up for Korver's lack of defensive abilities.  Having AK come off the bench makes a lot of sense; however, it all hinges on Sloan selling AK on the idea.

BYU's defense yet to face a solid quarterback - This Saturday BYU face the New Mexico Lobos, and another quarterback that is sub-par.  New Mexico's quarterback Brad Gruner has yet to throw for more than 100 yard in a game.  His high came against Tulsa with 98 yards.  He has just 55 yards against New Mexico State, and 33 yards passing against Wyoming. Gruner doesn't look to be a quarterback that will challenge the secondary of the Cougars.  The poor level of opposing quarterbacks has made it is hard to judge just how good/bad BYU's defense is at this point in the season.  Sure, you could make a valid argument that Jake Locker is a good football player, and he was the quarterback of Washington.  Yet, Locker isn't a good quarterback, he is a good athlete.  His athleticism is what gave BYU problems.  IF Jake Locker had been able to complete a pass BYU's defense would have been in real trouble.  Looking ahead TCU's quarterback is not a great passer, and BYU's first real test will come against UNLV's Omar Clayton.  How much a test Clayton will be is debatable, but the Mountain West Conference is not a quarterback strong conference this season.

Will Utah State carry away the momentum from the end of the BYU game - If the Aggies played the way they did in the fourth quarter against BYU every game, then they could compete with any team that they have left on their schedule.  It will be important for the Aggies to play well against San Jose State this weekend.  The Spartans are the first major non-ranked conference opponent that the Aggies face this season.  (Lets face it Idaho is not good at all. UNLV was a non-conference)Borel showed that he has the ability to move the Aggies' offense, and the defense proved they are able to get key stops against a good offense.  The Aggies are 1-4 right now, but they aren't going to be a cellar dweller in the WAC.  Winning on the road at a tough place to play (San Jose State's field is the worst kept field in all of college football.  It might be easier to play a football game in three feet of mud, because that is normally less mud than there is on San Jose State's field.) would help the Aggies going forward.

Time to jump on the Rays' bandwagon - As a Mets fan I find only one team left to rout for in the playoffs.  The Tampa Bay Rays.  Red Sox have won too much lately (which is a big difference from my Mets).  The Phillies are a divisional rival (I don't get people that cheer on teams inside their favorite teams division, after their team has been eliminated.  I hope the Phillies crash and burn!).  Their is too much history between the Dodgers and Mets to hope they win it all (Although I am hoping they destroy the Phillies and make it to the series).  The Rays are fun to watch, they are young, and the franchise has never done anything in the past.  Plus, I don't feel the guilt with jumping on the bandwagon, because if you watched a Rays' home game this season they had about 10-20 loyal fans in the stadium.  The rest of the people at the game were cheering for the other team.  All their fans are bandwagon fans!  It is cool because it is like seeing a fan base being born.  Go Rays!!!

Week 4 Mountain West Conference Football Predictions

Predictions for the Mountain West Conference following a historic weekend for the Conference...

It was a huge week for the Mountain West Conference last weekend. The Mountain West swept the games they had against the PAC-10. Including BYU crushing UCLA at home. I also came out on top over Scott in the prediction last week:

Mark[Last Week 7-5(.583) 21-13(.617) Head-to-Head 1-1-1]
Scott[Last Week 6-6(.500) 21-13(.617) Head-to-Head 1-1-1]

BYU starts conference play this weekend, Utah has a big conference road against Air Force, and Utah State has a crucial game against the Idaho Vandals. Plus, the rest of the conference tries to continue the success of the last week in more non-conference games. Here are this weeks predictions:

Wyoming @ #14 BYU 1PM MT The Mtn.

After having a chance to re-watch BYU's blowout victory against UCLA...WOW!!! The offense was just picking apart the Bruin's defense. The Wyoming defense has had trouble stopping Ohio, Air Force, and North Dakota State. This game is going to be ugly for the pokes.

BYU 52 Wyoming 3

BYU=Very good Wyoming=Very bad.

BYU 42 Wyoming 10

Houston @ Colorado State 1:30PM MT

Houston can really rack up the yardage! The Cougars are averaging 405 yards through the air a game. The problem is Houston's defense is awful. The Cougars couldn't stop the Falcons running game giving up 380 yards on the ground, and they also gave up 699 yards of total offence to Oklahoma State. Colorado State is rebuilding this season, but home field will be the difference in this game.

Colorado State 28 Houston 24

Houston put up 500+ yards offense last week against a better than expected Air Force team. CSU is still going through some growing pains. If CSU can control the game on the ground and keep the ball away from Houston’s offense, then the game may be closer than most people expect.

Houston 31 Colorado State 20

#20 Utah @ Air Force 2PM MT

This is the week that Air Force will be exposed. Utah is the better team, and the defense will be able to take away the running attack of the Falcons. Air Force gave up yardage against Houston, something they won't be able to afford against the Utes.

Utah 42 Air Force 13

Air Force always plays Utah tough and knows how to keep the ball away from a high-powered offense by running the ball. Air Force has a chance to pull the upset if they pressure Johnson and force turnovers. Last week they failed to complete a pass. If that happens again this week, look for a blowout in Utah’s favor. Utah has looked very good in their three games, and at times, their offense has looked unstoppable. Air Force’s D won’t stop the Utes, so it comes down to whether or not Utah’s D can stop Air Force’s rushing attack.

Utah 35 Air Force 31

New Mexico @ Tulsa 5:05PM MT

This is the first real challenge for Tulsa. Having started the season playing UAB, and North Texas. The Lobos are riding the momentum of beating Arizona. Tulsa's quarterback David Johnson has been great. Johnson had 7 total touchdowns against North Texas. Donovan Porterie, New Mexico's starting quarterback, has yet to throw a touchdown in three games. Turnovers has been the key for the Lobos. The Lobos had three turnovers in their game against TCU, and four against Texas A&M. In their only win the Lobos only had one turnover, and took the ball away from Arizona five times. If a team can't handle the ball at home, then they normally have issues with turnovers on the road.

Tulsa 38 New Mexico 28

Major props to the Lobos for not rolling over and playing dead for the third week in a row. New Mexico’s D was up to the challenge last week against a “*good” offense. *(Haven’t we been hearing that for a few years now from Arizona???). They face another very good offense this week. Tulsa is averaging about 50 points per game this year (UAB and North Texas). How much of last weeks victory will carry over into this game? I expect New Mexico to put up a fight.

Tulsa 28 New Mexico 24

TCU @ SMU 6PM MT CBSC

Texas Tech isn't known for their defense, and SMU only score seven points against Texas Tech's defense. TCU's defense are going to be going for the shut out. Big win for the Horned Frogs.

TCU 35 SMU 0

TCU’s top ranked defense goes up against June Jone’s vaunted spread attack. Ok, so SMU isn’t Hawaii (2007) and this game really shouldn’t be close. TCU’s defense is near the top in every category and their offense has looked impressive so far. The real storyline of the game is whether or not TCU will look past SMU to next week’s showdown with #2 Oklahoma.

TCU 27 SMU 14

Iowa State @ UNLV 7PM MT

Anyone who saw the end of the Arizona State vs UNLV game knows that it took a miracle catch in the end zone to force overtime, and a pass in overtime that hit multiple Arizona State defenders in the hands before somehow finding the hands of a UNLV receiver. UNLV rose up and knocked off a team that was looking forward to a game against a top ranked Georgia team this weekend. It is hard to judge just how good the Rebels are this season. Yet, Iowa State has two wins over poor competition, and only scored five points against Iowa. UNLV has never been able to carry any momentum in the past from victories. This is the change year in Vegas.

UNLV 24 Iowa State 14

First, my apologies to UNLV. That was an impressive win on the road against the #2 Pac 10 team. Apparently they aren’t who we though they were…or are they? Last year UNLV showed great promise when they beat Utah, but then failed to build on that victory. Will UNLV follow that same path this year? Iowa State comes in only scoring 5 points against an ok Iowa team. Just like a few years ago, I see Mike Sanford refusing to leave the field again after ISU scores late to win the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCpcAum2BSM) and then promptly trips over the grass.

Iowa State 17 UNLV 13

#6 LSU @ #10 Auburn 5:45 PM MT ESPN

LSU has played nobody. Appalachian State is only a challenge if your Michigan. North Texas also didn't prove to be much of a challenge. This is the first real game LSU is playing this season. Auburn hung on against Mississippi State on the road to win 3-2(yes that was really the score). Mississippi State had chances to win that game, and Auburn had troubles moving the ball. It is hard to win on the road in the SEC, and while Auburn's win wasn't pretty it gave them experience that will lead to the win over the Tigers

Auburn 17 LSU 10

Auburn and LSU always have great defenses. How will both young QBs handle the pressure of their first big-time SEC game? Not very many people can roll into Auburn and come away with a victory. I just think that LSU has a more complete team. Auburn’s D can only keep them in the game for so long against the defending national champs.

LSU 24 Auburn 17

#3 Georgia @ Arizona State 6PM MT ABC

Arizona State was overrated going into the season. They were exposed at home against UNLV. The players are embarrassed, and they have the #3 Georgia Bulldogs coming to town. Yet, nobody is talking about how Georgia barely hung on to beat South Carolina on the road last week. The Bulldogs look comfortable and Arizona State is looking for redemption. Look for the Sun Devils to find redemption this weekend.

Arizona State 28 Georgia 14

How does ASU bounce back after losing last week to UNLV at home? ASU has had this game circled on the calendar for a long time now, and they have something to prove. The only problem is that so does Georgia. Georgia has fallen in the rankings and would love to make a statement on a nationally televised night game, just like USC did last week.

Georgia 31 Arizona State 17

Notre Dame @ Michigan State 1:30 PM MT ABC

Michigan State isn't going to turn over the ball six times like Michigan did last weekend. Sorry Charlie your ACL won't be the only thing hurting after this weekend, your butt is going to also be sore.

Michigan State 49 Notre Dame 7

Michigan State’s recent dominance against ND coupled with ND’s football incompetence means a long day for the Irish. Sure, the Irish are 2-0, but the film doesn’t lie…they are slightly improved over last year’s 3-9 debacle. Clawson is improving and they do have a very good deep threat in Tate, but they are still too young to go on the road and win against a quality team. Michigan State’s Ringer rushed for nearly 300 yards last week and looks to carry the load again this week.

Michigan State 31 Notre Dame 13

#18 Wake Forrest @ #24 Florida State 5PM MT ESPN2

It is hard to go to Florida State and get a win. Wake Forest doesn't have the team to get it done.

Florida State 28 Wake Forest 14

Does Florida State finally have an offense to go with their D? Wake Forrest is a solid football team. They don’t do anything great, yet they find a way to win football games. FSU has looked good against lesser opponents (go figure) and this game will be very telling for both teams.

Florida State 24 Wake Forest 21

Idaho @ Utah State 2PM MT ESPN360

This is the game in the season that Utah State must win. While the Aggies have looked bad the last two weeks they have been playing tough opponents. Utah State says Borel will be the starter this weekend. That is a move in the right direction to turn the season around. Utah State wins at home.

Utah State 28 Idaho 17

UNLV looked to be a winnable game for USU, but they were on the road. USU finally gets a game at home that they should win. There aren’t very many games on USU’s schedule that they will be favored to win (the line is 4.5) and they need to take care of business. If the win this game and get some confidence they have a chance at putting together a pretty good season (winning as many games this year as they have in the past three years combined). Their best football is in front of them. Their conference season begins on Saturday and that is what is most important.

Utah State 20 Idaho 17

Mark's Thoughts: Are the Utah State Aggies Lost for the Year?

This weekends game against Idaho might be the make or break game of the season for Utah State...

Where do the Aggies go after the 58-10 loss at the hands of the University of Utah? The Aggies are now 0-3. This outcome shouldn't come as any shock to people looking at their schedule before the season. Looking at the first five games the Aggies only had one that looked like a very winnable game. This weekend's contest against the University of Idaho. There was also a game in which they could compete for the win. That game was the home opener against UNLV. The other three games all were against ranked opponents: Oregon, Utah, and BYU. The Aggies haven't just dropped the games against Oregon and Utah, they were never in those games at any point.

With the Aggies being 0-3 it is very important for them to get a win at home against Idaho. A loss to Idaho could spell disaster for the remainder of the season. Coach Guy needs to prove that his program is heading in the right direction. It is very hard to sell that your program is heading in the right direction when you use the word "embarrassing" to describe your loss to the Utes, or saying your team is back at "ground level." If Coach Guy wants to have times to see the program turn around, then he must win this game against the Vandals.

It will be interesting to see how the Aggies play against the University of Idaho. This will show if the Aggies have raw talent that needs time to grow, or if they just don't have anything and need to blow up the current program. Attitude will be a key part of this weekends game.

While watching the Utah State game against Utah, it seemed like the Aggies weren't playing to win the game. They didn't come out with much energy and were content to take what Utah was going to give them in the game. Even when the Aggies got a lucky bounce and capitalized on great field position, they didn't use that momentum to create a sense that they could win the football game. It looked like the Aggies didn't think they had a chance, and played scared.

Against the Vandals the Aggies should be favored at home. In turn it will be interesting to see if the players come out with a swagger that this is a team that they should be able to handle. With that attitude the players will be making plays, and recovering from mistakes.

Getting a game in the win column is very important for the confidence of the team for the remainder or the season. Even though the first five games for the Aggies appear difficult, the remainder of the season doesn't get easier. After the BYU game the Aggies head out on the road to face a good San Jose State team, and Nevada. Both of those games are against opponents that Utah State should be able to compete with for a victory. Although it is always difficult to win on the road. Especially if the Aggies are still trying to win the first game of the season. Getting that first win would allow for them to play without the added pressure of a win less season.

Fresno State and Hawaii then come to Logan, both games that would be hard for the Aggies to pick up a win. Then the Aggies go on the road to face Boise State. It is hard for any team to beat the Broncos on the smurf turf. The last two games of the season for the Aggies start at Louisiana Tech, and home against the Aggies of New Mexico State. The schedule isn't favorable for the Aggies, with most of their winnable games coming on the road.

Yet, all of those winnable road wins become even more difficult if the Aggies don't pick up the first win of the season against Idaho this weekend. Realistically if the Aggies pick up a win this weekend; four wins isn't out of the question this season for the Aggies. Likewise if the Aggies drop this game against the Vandals, the Aggies might be playing New Mexico State at the end of the season in hopes of not going win less.

The time for moral victories came and went for the Aggies. There isn't a lot of positive things that have happened for the Aggies on the field this season. Yet, the time to save the season is this Saturday. The game against the Vandals is really the make or break game of the season not only for the Aggies for this season, but perhaps for the head coaching career of Coach Guy. The season can be turned around, but it must start this weekend.

Week 3 Predictions for the Mountain West Conference

Predictions for every Mountain West Conference football game for Week three, plus the games of the week...

Although both Scott and I improved from our week one predictions, Scott did come out on top this week. Here are the results and standings:

Mark [Last Week 8-3(.727) Overall 14-8(.636) Head to head 0-1-1]
Scott [Last Week 9-2(.818) Overall 15-7(.681) Head to head 1-0-1]

There are some very interesting match-ups this week in college football. In state the Aggies and the Utes should be a very entertaining contest. Plus, BYU has something to prove against UCLA this week. Trying to silence the critics in the national media whom are calling foul after the excessive celebration penalty last weekend at Washington. This week is also a big week for the Mountain West Conference. The conference is taking on three PAC-10 opponents in winnable games. TCU could establish themselves as a third national contender with a win this weekend over Stanford, and Air Force could also open some eyes with a good showing at Houston. Here are this weeks predictions:

#22 Utah at Utah State 6PM MT KJZZ

Utah has proven that they have the talent to be a very good football team this season. What they haven't proved is that they can consistently play an entire football game. There is also some major question marks for the Utes at the defensive tackle position. Johnson also hasn't proven that he can make good decisions in the face of pressure. Yet, Utah is so explosive that it will be hard for the Aggies to stay in the game. The Aggies really would have to be able to control the football by moving it on the ground, and have no mistakes on either side of the ball to pull the upset. Emotions will keep the Aggies in the game in the first half, but I think the Utes offense will carry them to the victory.

Utah 30 Utah State 20

I’m not sure where to begin here. You are never quite sure what Utah team is going to show up. When Utah is on, they are virtually unbeatable, yet they seem to lose focus very easily. How is Utah State going to respond to last week’s loss? I’ll never count USU out of this game because Utah never plays their best against USU. If USU can get pressure on Johnson and force him to make plays, then this game is close.

Utah 35 Utah State 17

UCLA at #18 BYU 1:30 PM MT Versus

It seems that many people have forgotten about how UCLA beat Tennessee. Kevin Craft had a terrible first half against Tennessee. UCLA's defense was able to frustrate the young Tennessee quarterback, and that was why they were in the game. Bell is injured and doesn't look as if he will play. That puts even more pressure on Craft to beat the Cougars through the air. The problem for the Cougars is at times against Washington the secondary wasn't within fifteen feet of the Huskies receivers. BYU couldn't defend the deep ball, which means that Norm Chow is foaming at the mouth to deploy his offense in Provo. BYU needs a statement game to prove that last weeks game was the fluke it was; however, BYU's defense isn't going to be able to slow down the Bruins. The offense will have to win this game, and it is going to be a close finish.

BYU 35 UCLA 31

Another week, another PAC 10 team. Was UCLA’s win against Tennessee a result of UCLA being good, or Tennessee being bad. I think UCLA’s defense is as good as advertised. In the two meetings last year, BYU struggled to move the ball against UCLA’s defense. If UCLA can cause turnovers like they did against Tennessee, then it could be a long day for the Cougars. BYU’s defense looked very vulnerable last week against Washington and needs to play better if they are to win. The only team that has been able to stop the BYU’s offense is, well, BYU. If they can hold onto the ball they will score a ton of points. UCLA is playing their 3rd string QB. Any team claiming this is in trouble.

North Dakota State at Wyoming 1PM MT

North Dakota State can run. They had 149 yards in their first game, and then 330 yards in their second game. Of course that was against Austin Peay and Central Connecticut State. Although with how the Wyoming defense looked against Air Force it is hard to see how Wyoming is going to slow do the offense of North Dakota State. Wyoming had 5 turnovers last week, and hasn't show much fight this season barely beating Ohio in the opener. Unless the defense of Wyoming shows up this has the makings of a very embarrassing loss for the Pokes. Wyoming should prevail in a nail biter.

Wyoming 28 North Dakota State 24

Believe it or not, North Dakota State has a pretty good team. Wyoming has yet to look sharp on the field. After laying down to Air Force last week, I expect Wyoming to come out hungry. Coach Glenn is basically playing for his job now. A loss to North Dakota State would be devastating to the program.

Air Force at Houston 1:30PM MT CBSC

Air Force is the surprise team in the conference. They have been able to control the game by moving the ball very successfully on the ground. This game pits the rushing attack of Air Force against the spread air attack of Houston. Houston's quarterback Case Keenum put up 387 yards and 4 touchdowns against a very talented Oklahoma State defense. He also had 61 pass attempts in the game. Proving that Houston will keep airing it out throughout the game. Yet, the Houston defense gave up 699 yards against Oklahoma State, with 379 of those yards coming on the ground. The Falcons will be able to control the ball and keep it away from the Cougars offense long enough to squeak out a victory.

Air Force 31 Houston 28

Air Force has been a pleasant surprise so far in the season. The question is whether that young team can build on last week’s victory over Wyoming. Houston presents an interesting match up for Air Force. While Houston’s offense can put up impressive numbers, their defense is a work in progress. I give the edge to Houston as they are playing at home.

Stanford at TCU 5PM MT The Mtn.

This game will tell a lot about just how good TCU is this season. They have dominated their first two games of the season, and get their first challenge of the season at home against Stanford. Stanford has had trouble moving the ball in their first two games. Even in their win they were out gained 490 yards to 301 yards. 3 Turnovers ensured the Cardinals the win in the game over Oregon State. TCU should be ready to contain the Cardinal offense, and take care of business at home.

TCU 35 Standford 21

Stanford is not a team that TCU can afford to look past. TCU has looked very strong is their two victories this season, and of course are right in the middle of the whole BCS busting talk. I like what Jim Harbaugh has done with this team, but they are still a couple of years away from being able to go on the road and win consistently (I know, I know, they beat USC on the road last year). It is close and TCU holds on.

San Diego State at San Jose State 6PM MT

San Jose State was in the game against Nebraska until the fourth quarter over the weekend. Kyle Reed the starting quarterback went down in the fourth quarter and backup Myles Eden wasn't able to move the offense at all when he came into the game. Kyle Reed should be back to lead the Spartans against the Aztecs. San Diego State was a fumble away from upsetting Notre Dame; however, I think that is more telling about how bad Notre Dame has become rather than how the Aztecs have improved since week one. Spartans take care of business at home.

San Jose State 28 San Diego State 10

SDSU should have come out of South Bend with a victory, but the fumbled on the 1cm line. Chuck long better start winning, or he won’t have time to build the program. Last week’s game look promising for the Aztecs. SJSU is not a good football team.

Arizona at New Mexico 6PM MT CBSC

The Lobos are dead to me. They have bitten me twice this season! Arizona wins easily over down Lobo team.

Arizona 38 New Mexico 7

Last year New Mexico shocked Arizona in Tuscan, but I don’t see a repeat performance from the Lobos. Arizona’s offense seems to finally be clicking. Considering that nothing is clicking for this New Mexico team, it is difficult to say how much this team will be improved this week. Will they play better??? I think so, but with how things have looked so far in the season, I don’t think New Mexico will be playing in the New Mexico bowl this year.

UNLV at #15 Arizona State 8PM MT

UNLV will be over matched in their visit to Arizona State. The Rebels only chance is the Devils are looking ahead to Georgia next week end. Even if Arizona State brings a D+ performance it should be an easy win.

Arizona State 49 UNLV 14

UNLV played a very good first 25 minutes against a good Utah team last week. They let Utah take control of the game off of their own mistakes. Like last week, UNLV keeps the game close in the first quarter, but they won’t be able to keep up with the firepower from ASU.

#13 Kansas at #19 South Florida 6PM MT ESPN2

South Florida didn't look good against Central Florida last weekend. They allowed UCF to comeback and send the game into overtime. While Kansas has strolled through their first two games. This is Kansas's first road game, and their first challenge of the season. Kansas should be prepared to take care of the Bulls.

Kansas 35 South Florida 21

Kansas has looked impressive the first two weeks of the season. It took overtime for South Florida to beat Central Florida. The question is going to be if USF can stop Kansas’ offense. The battle of the QBs looks like this: KU Reesing 69/90 668, 6 TD, 1 INT…13 carries for 24 yards; USF Grothe 29/48 442, 5 TD, 2 INT…24 carries for 73 yards. I like Reesing in this game.

#5 Ohio State at #1 USC 6PM MT ABC

Ohio State didn't have Chris Wells last week, and it showed against Ohio. Ohio St barely squeaked by their instate rival. They face a great USC team on the road. USC went to Virginia and destroyed the Cavaliers. They had a week to game plan for Ohio State. The Buckeyes better be ready to hear the USC fight song a lot, because the Buckeyes are going to be exposed on the road.

USC 42 Ohio State 13

Just the fact that this game was scheduled makes me happy. Two very good offenses are going against the top defenses in the nation. Chris Wells is the X factor here. If his ankle is 100% then OSU has a very good chance to win this game. Ohio State desperately needs to prove that it belongs among the college football elite. Unfortunately for Ohio State they have to travel to LA to play this game. USC is coming off their bye week and will be prepared to play. It doesn’t seem to matter who is running the USC offense, they are effective and score a ton of points. USC’s defense is just as good as Ohio State’s and on big play will make the difference.

#10 Wisconsin at #21 Fresno State 8:30PM MT ESPN2

Wisconsin is not a good road team, in the past they have been under-prepared to play away from home. Fresno State had a good road win at Rutgers to start the season. Although the first half of that game was a defensive (boring) stalemate. They have a stout defense that should be able to contain P.J. Hill and the Wisconsin ground attack. Fresno State should be able to get a big home win.

Fresno State 21 Wisconsin 13

Fresno State is another team in the mix for the title of “BCS Buster” and has more to lose from this game than Wisconsin does. The Badgers are breaking in a new QB and will rely heavily on their running backs and defense, which shouldn’t sound new if you follow Wisconsin football. Look for the Badgers to control the game on the ground with PJ Hill. Is Fresno State for real??? If they don’t win the WAC it is a disappointment, but I don’t see BCS in their horizon.

Michigan at Notre Dame 1:30 PM MT NBC

Notre Dame is awful! To see them celebrating holding on at home against the Aztecs was really telling of how far the Fighting Irish have fallen. The Wolverines are in a down year, but they are good enough to handle Notre Dame on the road.

Michigan 35 Notre Dame 10

This is the second straight year that both of these teams come into this game unranked. The last time that happened was, well NEVER. Lets be honest, both of these teams are not very good. Notre Dame was very lucky to win last week against SDSU. Michigan survived a close call against Miami (OH). It doesn’t look like ND has improved much over last year’s debacle. They can’t run block or protect the QB. ND’s defense looked very average against SDSU’s below average offense. Michigan isn’t much better. Michigan’s offense is very young, and injuries on the offensive line are creating major problems. Michigan’s QBs can’t run or pass, which is generally not a good thing. Michigan’s defense is only giving up 41 yards/game on the ground, so Clausen is going to have to beat them through the air.

Michigan 17 Notre Dame 7
